Narrative description of Project:

 

The objective of the project were to:

§ Objectives:

§ The broader objective of the proposed project is to “strengthen capacity of the community, especially of the most poor and vulnerable group to reduce their risk to livelihood insecurity.

§ Specific Objectives:

§ To increase adaptation capacity of the vulnerable female and male community members in livelihood security areas; and

§ To make proactive the DMCs and community in initiating community level risk reduction plans. 

 

 

This project envisaged developing 35 villages under the Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira district through adaptation capacity of the vulnerable female and male community members in livelihood security areas and provided support for socio-economic development of the vulnerable groups In order to implement the programmes based on the above objectives, the quantitative targets of the components were set forth in the project which were completed by the end of the project period. The specific activities of the project were as follows:

 

§ CRA Revisit component for reviewing the recommendations which have been either over looked or omitted during CRA operation and as such BNM conducted CRA revisit at 4 unions of Kalaroa Upozila.

§ Support to run small business for poor persons with disabilities project at Kushodangha union’ for enabling the disable people to reduce their risk of hazards of disaster. the  IGA trainings were imparted to 9 people with disabilities to run small business who got logistic support to run small grocery shops at 9 wards of Kushodangha.

§ Support 9 poor persons with disabilities to run small business in Kushodanga Union under Kalaroa Upazila in Satkhira District.

§ Installation of rain water harvesting plants and building awareness for safe water to reduce water borne health risk. in Kushodangha union.

§ Supporting Ultra poor women of 9 wards of Langhaljhera union to enhance family income and there by reduce disaster risk. through duck rearing program.

§ Construction of 18 Rain Water Harvesting Plants in 9 wards under Koila union of Kalaroa Upozila of Satkhira district to reduce the Risk of arsenic Contamination of Community people.

§ orientation meeting for building awareness of the students and taught on arsenic contamination and alternative options arranged at Purba Koila registered primary school.

§ Seminar on arsenic contamination and its adverse impact on human body was arranged on 13-04-2008 at the Premises of Koila Union Parishad.a registered primary school.

Description of actual services provided in the assignment:

 

Under these context BNM has undertaken the disaster management and it’s risk reduction program. Preliminarily to identify the local risks of disaster and points of solution of its hazards with the decisions of local community people, women, representatives of the disable people, members of union disaster management committees (UDMCs). With the assistance UNDP and DFID Bangladesh Government has been trying to take steps to reduce risk of disaster permanently and introduced Community Risk Assessment (CRA) operation in the project district including project area.

It could be reasonably expected that through CRA operation and CRA revisit the actual situation of the project area and project district could successfully be identified and risk reduction solution could be obtained through participation of the community leaders, landless people, marginal agriculturalists, women, people with disabilities and development workers. Through CRA operation and CRA revisit all hazards which the community people of the project area and that of project district are to face due to flood, over flood, water logging, droughts and arsenic contamination could be identified and solutions could be obtained.

It is expected that by strengthening capability of the community people and building adaptation capacity of the vulnerable female and male community members in livelihood security areas, and by making the community people proactive united to cope with the hazards the risk of disasters could be reduced. To these ends in view the project planning is prepared and the project activities were undertaken.

Beneficiaries have been identified and the lists of prospective illiterate and neo literate male and female and adolescent boys and girls were prepared. A wide rage of motivational campaigns have been undertaken in the project area which had created an atmosphere in favour of education in all walks of life. Organisation of centres, selection of learners, recruitment of teachers and training to the teachers were made on yearly basis. Are normally made. Intensive training Programmes for the teachers and supervisors were arranged in phases. Assessment of achievement was made phase by phase by the centre management committee, supervisors, and MIS officers from BNM central office.
